{"id":117,"date":"2012-03-22T19:32:23","date_gmt":"2012-03-23T01:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/?p=117"},"modified":"2012-03-22T19:32:23","modified_gmt":"2012-03-23T01:32:23","slug":"sam-glazer-the-man-who-made-america-safe-for-coffee-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/?p=117","title":{"rendered":"Sam Glazer, The Man Who Made America Safe For Coffee, dies."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Prior to 1972, America boiled their coffee.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/450px-Perkulator.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-119\" title=\"450px-Perkulator\" src=\"https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/450px-Perkulator-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/450px-Perkulator-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/450px-Perkulator.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The instrument of this torture was the percolator coffee pot, that would boil water, force it up into a basket of grounds and drip it back down into the caudron below.\u00a0 Yes, by the end of the process you had heated brewed coffee to the boiling point and redripped it several times.\u00a0 This made for a powerful tasting (note here that powerful did not mean &#8220;good&#8221;) cup of joe that would grow hair on your chest.\u00a0 This ain&#8217;t the stuff folks stand in line for at Starbucks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sam-Glazer-with-Mr.-Coffee_1409.50.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-118\" title=\"Sam Glazer with Mr. Coffee_1409.50\" src=\"https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sam-Glazer-with-Mr.-Coffee_1409.50.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sam-Glazer-with-Mr.-Coffee_1409.50.jpg 280w, https:\/\/coffee.germar.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sam-Glazer-with-Mr.-Coffee_1409.50-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then came a man named Sam Glazer.\u00a0 He made a little coffee maker out of plastic and paper filters.\u00a0 And he called it &#8220;Mr. Coffee.&#8221;\u00a0 And the clouds parted.\u00a0 And the people gave shouts of great gladness.\u00a0\u00a0 No longer would they have to drink 40 weight motor oil sprinkled with non-dairy creamer.\u00a0 They would have a brew that was lighter, brighter and just plain good for the soul.\u00a0 His coffee machine was a big hit, selling millions of units in a short period of time.\u00a0 The addition of sports spokesperson Joe DiMaggio on television commercials made the Mr. Coffee machine a home and television icon of the 1970&#8217;s and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone remember &#8220;Mr. Fusion&#8221; from 1985&#8217;s &#8220;Back The Future?&#8221;\u00a0 Well, without Sam Glazer&#8217;s contribution to pop culture, Marty McFly&#8217;s DeLauren would have been running on percolated coffee.\u00a0 Wow.<\/p>\n<p>He passed away on the date of this entry, March 22, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The folks at NPR.org has posted an interview about Mr. Glazer, and how America rose out of the dark ages for coffee.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nice, compact read &#8230;
